Radford City Schools and Police partner on bus safety enforcement using cameras to catch drivers illegally passing stopped school buses.
Radford City Schools and the Radford Police Department are partnering on school bus safety enforcement as students return to class. Many buses are equipped with cameras that capture license plates of drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. Footage is turned over to Radford Police for enforcement. Transportation Manager Gracie Duncan noted the measure is to encourage drivers to slow down. Under Virginia law, drivers must stop when a school bus has warning lights activated and stop sign extended. More than 1,000 people have died in school transportation-related crashes nationwide since 2015.
